Discussion questions
Use the following questions to run a group discussion after attending a live performance of Stomach.
- Where and when was the play set? How did you know this? Use the script, and your observations of the staging, set, and costume to give examples.
- How were theatre technologies (including lighting and sound) used to set the play in a time and place?
- How were theatre technologies (including lighting and sound) used to create mood and atmosphere in the play?
- What was the main conflict in the story? How were the staging, set, costume, sound, and lighting used to create and portray this conflict during the performance?
- Who were the key characters portrayed in the play? What theatre conventions were used throughout the performance to establish each of the characters in the play?
- Use sketches, quotations, and examples to describe how space was used to tell the story.
- Describe a specific language feature (eg. movie quotes, colloquialisms, etc) used in the play. How did the use of these language features serve the story?
- Describe the key themes in the play. How did the staging, set, costume, lighting, sound, and performance help to highlight these themes?
- What did each of the characters represent in the play? How do the characters change throughout the play?
